Encyclopedia - Terms
Unsprung Weight or Unsprung Mass :
Is the mass of the motorcycle that is not supported by the suspension,
such as wheels, brakes, tires, etc.
Valvetrain :
A term used to describe the mechanisms and parts which control the operation of the valves in an internal combustion engine.

Question : What does a " wet " cluthch mean ?
Answer : The clutch operates in a oil bath inside the clutch housing. The opposite of wet clutch is "Dry" clutch where
lubrication is not needed.
Question : Why does a motorcycle need a clutch ?

Answer : A motorcycle needs a clutch to transmit power from the engine to the back wheel for driving, also to disengage power to the back wheel,while engine is running and motorcycle is standing still.
Question : How does a tune-up benefit your motorcycle ?

Answer : In order to obtain peak performance from a motorcycle, each part must be correctly adjusted. If one part is not performing well, it effects the performance of the other parts.
Example : Failure of a spark plug to fire can be caused by an electrical system malfunction or by carburation system problems.
Question : What can cause a flooded engine ?

Answer : A stuck carburator float. You can clean the float with a carburator cleaner, this should do the job. With a fuel injection bike, flooding should not be considered a factor.
Question : What could be the cause for the brakes on a motorcycle fail to stop the wheel ?

Answer : Most likely the problem would be oil on the pads. Causes could be oil picked up from the road, brake oil residue
was still present when brake where changed, or the brake line may have a leak. Spray brake pads with a brake cleaner. If there is a leak in a line, replace brake line and parts.

Answer : It's the term used which descrbes a circuit break which interrupts the flow of electrical current.
Worm and Pinion Gear :
System for turning rotational movement through 90 degree, in
which a pinion is turned by a spirally cut gear.

Table-Top Jump :
Similar to a double jump, except the void between the jumps is filled
in with dirt, creating the table -top.
Simplex :
A lightweight motorized bike manufactured from 1935 to 1960 in
Louisiana. Starting the engine was accomplished by straddling the
bike and taking a few brisk steps.
Redline :
The maximum number of revolutions per minute an engine can
run before damage occurs.
Parallel Twin :
A two-cylinder engine configuration in which both cylinders are
mounted side by side and across the frame.
Over Square :
An engine with a great cylinder bore than piston stoke.
